BRANDSTALK #172

SOUL CONNECTING STRESS & RESILIENCE COACH
JENNIFER WREN TOLO
Your biggest branding challenge may not be your strategy, your messaging, or your visual identity. It may be the state from which you are building your brand.
Because your brand is not just what you communicate, it is what you embody.
A powerful brand is never built from exhaustion, pressure, or constant performance. It is built from alignment.
That was one of the key insights from my recent BrandsTalk conversation with Jennifer Wren Tolo—health and wellness educator, former critical care nurse, resilience coach, and creator of the PAUSE Method.
Our conversation revealed a powerful truth:
Before you refine your brand, you need to reconnect with the person behind it.
The Hidden Cost of Survival Mode
We live in a world that rewards constant action. More goals. More achievements. More productivity.
But many successful leaders, founders, and entrepreneurs are operating from survival mode—always doing, achieving, and responding, while becoming disconnected from themselves.
They don’t necessarily have a branding problem. They have an identity gap.
Because when your internal identity is unclear, your external brand becomes a performance rather than an expression of who you truly are.
Authentic branding starts long before logos, colours, and content strategies.
It starts with self-awareness.
The Pause Creates Clarity
Jennifer’s PAUSE Method is built around a simple but powerful idea: creating space before reacting.
The pause is not about slowing down or stepping away from ambition.
It is about regaining clarity, regulating your response, and making intentional choices instead of operating from urgency, fear, or external expectations.
This is where branding and leadership intersect.
When you pause, you reconnect with your values, your intuition, and your unique perspective.
And that is where authentic brands are born.
Branding is not about finding your voice. It is about becoming quiet enough to hear it.
Your Brand Should Reflect You—Not Replace You
One of the most memorable moments of our conversation was Jennifer’s story about her logo.
After changing direction in her business, she created a logo featuring a tree with deep roots, sunlight, and six birds representing her family. It carried personal meaning and reflected her journey.
A branding expert later suggested replacing it with something more contemporary. The advice was professionally valid—but something felt wrong. Jennifer chose to trust her intuition and keep the original design because it represented something no trend could replace:
her story.
This does not mean expertise is irrelevant. The best branding professionals don’t create identities for people. They help reveal what is already there. A visual identity can support a brand—but it cannot compensate for a lack of alignment. People don’t connect with perfection. They connect with authenticity and congruence.
Stop Building Your Brand Around “Should”
One word came up repeatedly in our conversation:
Should.
“I should sound more professional.”
“I should post more like others.”
“I should position myself this way.”
“I should follow this formula.”
But the most powerful brands are not created by following someone else’s blueprint. They are created by understanding your own. Comparison creates copies. Identity creates originals.
The question that changes everything is not:
“What is everyone else doing?”
It is:
“Who am I becoming?”
Key Takeaways from This Conversation
- Your nervous system influences your brand more than your visual identity.
- A brand built from burnout will always feel disconnected.
- The pause is not a weakness—it is a strategic advantage.
- Intuition and strategy work together.
- Experts can guide you, but they should never replace your own knowing.
- The “shoulds” often hide the most authentic version of your brand.
- Authentic brands are uncovered, not manufactured.
- Becoming is the foundation of unforgettable branding.
The greatest branding advantage is not doing more. It is creating the space to become more aligned with who you truly are.
